Original Item: Only One Available. This just came out of the attic after a hundred years of storage together with a couple of hundred other guns. This very nice trade shotgun was made under contract in Liege Belgium and marked on the Barrel rib BELGIUM > FINE TWIST <. Removing the barrel shows serial number 7437, along with the “Tower of Liège” proofmark from Belgium. The bottom of the barrel also has this marking as well as the E / L G / * in an Oval proof mark.
The shotgun was made under contract especially for J. MANTON & Co. of 116 Jermyn Street, London, which ceased operations in 1877. Manton’s also maintained an office in Culcutta India where a great quantity of their material was destined. JOHN MANTON was one of England’s finest gunsmiths in the early part of the 19th Century, as was his brother JOSEPH, who would mentor several famous mid 19th Century gunsmiths, whose sons carried on the business after them.
A Double 10 bore packed a tremendous punch with shot or ball so this was ideal for serious large Indian game. It is a side lever opener on the left side, and the twisted layers of the barrel can be seen on the underside. The rear butt plate is a lovely cast example, with designs showing a Deer and a hound, so we suspect that this example was intended for the British and European market, or maybe even the U.S..
Not for shooting any more this is offered as a decorator, as we found it in the old collection. Ready to display as is, or could be cleaned up nicely to make a lovely display piece!
