Original Item: Only One Available. This is a very nice Austrian-made NCO bayonet for the Mannlicher Model 1895 straight pull bolt action Rifle, which was the principal Rifle of the FIRST WORLD WAR for the Austrian Empire. The M1895 bayonet was the first knife bayonet to feature an inverted blade profile, where cutting edge faces upward when fixed.
This example definitely looks to have led quite the interesting life, as originally these were produced in bright steel with wooden grips, however this is blued and has a lovely set of worn stag antler grips. The blade definitely has been sharpened several times, and it looks to have seen very long service. It is possible that this continued use into the WWII era. The bayonet is stamped with Œ over WG, the marking for Österreichische Waffenfabriksgesellschaft (Austrian Arms-Manufacturing Company), abbreviated as ŒWG. Steyr Mannlicher firearm production was a part of this company. The reverse ricasso of the bayonet has a faint Austrian Eagle proof mark under CE.
The included scabbard shows a lot of past oxidation and wear, with the finish almost completely gone. It is held in a leather bayonet frog which looks to have been custom fabricated from another letter item, as evidenced by the stitch holes on the rear. Around this there is a lovely troddel knot, usually only seen on NCO bayonets during the first world war period. Definitely some very interesting aspects to this item!
A rare bayonet and scabbard from the Austro-Hungarian empire with some fantastic period alterations, ready to research and display!
