Original Item: Only One Available. This is a very nice example of the MASSIVE Sword Socket bayonet for the Austrian M1849 Augustin Jäger and Pioneer Rifles. These were shorter than the standard issue rifles, and therefore needed the extra reach these bayonets provided. Due to the heavy weight, they have a very long sturdy socket, with a very secure locking system. The bayonet was designed to be used as either a bayonet or a sword, depending on the situation.
These were only made for a short time period, about 1849 to 1854, and were issued to the first two battalions in a regiment, which traditionally were the Jäger (hunter) battalions. Other select units also received these bayonets, such as Pioneer and Artillery soldiers, who also used shorter firearms and had a need for a sturdy bayonet.
These were also imported in some number during the U.S. Civil war, along with obsolete Augustin Muskets & Carbines, which had been superseded by the superior Lorenz Rifle.
A very nice example of a hard to find bayonet, ready to add to your collection!
