Origianl Item: Only One Available. This is something that we have not had before! At first we were somewhat unclear on its origin, but the three number dates and the partial “Double Headed Eagle” Crest tells us this is from the Austrian Empire, which existed in Central Europe from 1804 to 1867. It was later supplanted by the “Dual Monarchy” of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, which lasted until 1918.
The sword is the classic naval cutlass style, with a broad curved blade with a single fuller, and a simple “P” shaped guard surrounding a leather wrapped wooden grip. It looks like originally it was wire wrapped, but the wrapping has unfortunately degraded. The hilt in general has an overall oxidized patina, but no major rust, and looks great. There appear to be some markings stamped into one side of the cross guard, but they are illegible. The other side is marked 1852.
The blade ricasso is marked MITTEL, which may be part of the maker name, as it translates to “middle”. The reverse ricasso is marked with the Austrian Double Headed Eagle, which is struck partially, next to an 852 date and W / A D. Blade condition is quite nice, with only light areas of staining.
The leather scabbard has unfortunately not fared as well, and is missing the last 5 inches or so . It is stitched around a metal throat at the top, which has a heart-shaped frog button.
A great mid 19th century Austrian Empire Naval Cutlass, ready to display!!
