Original Item. Only One Available. This was originally a FLINTLOCK Saddle ring Carbine, made around 1815, which was then converted to the Percussion cap ignition system in 1840. It was subsequently sold to the United States, and imported just prior to the U.S. Civil War, where many of these weapons saw service, mostly on the Confederate side.
The Carbine measures just shy of 30″ in overall length, the rifled barrel measuring just 14 1/2″. The wood stock is quality walnut and the mounts are all iron, many of which bear faded proof marks. The elongated side plate incorporates a large saddle ring, onto which a body sling was usually attached, which would allow the carbine to hang down at the trooper’s right side. This would play the part of the left hand should the rider need to discharge the weapon with his right shoulder by giving the required tension to provide an accurate shot while the left hand steers the horse. It also of course prevented the weapon from falling to the ground.
Found in an attic with years of neglect this Carbine has now just been cleaned and oiled to this marvelous display condition. Ready to display!
