Original Item: Only One Available. This is a wonderful example of an unissued First World War Australian Mounted Cavalry Canteen, complete with leather carrier straps and shoulder strap. While there are a few moth nips, the canteen itself does appear to be unissued, making this a wonderful offering.
With a capacity of 2 pints, this type of water bottle was the standard issue to the British/Commonwealth Armies during the First World War and was designed to be carried on the 1908 pattern web equipment.
The 1908 equipment, when fully assembled, formed a single piece, and could be put on or taken off like a jacket. Ammunition was stored in two sets of pouches attached to the belt at the front, and the straps from these passed over the shoulders, crossing diagonally at the back.
The overall condition is quite nice with only storage wear present. The cork stopper is present but degraded slightly due to age, so handle with caution. All leather and web components are in wonderful, solid and functional condition with minor creasing.
A lovely canteen set ready for further research and display.
