Original Item: Only One Available. Under the leadership of Eduard Neumann, the pilots of JG-52 were granted a level of freedom in the air that was unprecedented on the Channel Front. Flying in coordinated pairs and fours, they patrolled the North African skies, launching surprise attacks on enemy formations from above. These tactics proved particularly effective for the more aggressive pilots, and several individuals emerged as stars within the unit, none more prominent than Hans-Joachim Marseille. In his brief but illustrious career in the desert, Marseille achieved over 150 victories, more than any other Luftwaffe Ace against RAF pilots during World War II.
This popular limited edition which is the last in Robert Taylor’s long sold-out Protagonist series, records Marseille’s jubilant low pass as he returns to his Desert airstrip having just achieved his 100th victory. In the foreground his fellow pilots are seen clambering out of their Me109s having just completed another successful mission. Robert’s masterful painting painting brings to life the heat and dust of the Western Desert, the acrid aroma of hot engines and the exhilaration of victory as another combat mission ends.
Each print bears the signature of four highly-distinguished Luftwaffe fighter pilots who had the honor of flying and fighting alongside the legendary Ace, Hans-Joachim Marseille. He was known as the “Star of Africa” and was Killed in Action on September 30, 1942 in Egypt.
