Original Item: One of a Kind. The traditional weapon of the Irish for many centuries has been the solid wood club we all know as a “SHILLELAGH.” These were traditionally carried by Irish Farmers and Yeomen as a sign of importance and at a push a defensive weapon. This example dating to the 1880’s and 1890’s deliberately resembles the African ZULU War Club known as a Knobkierie. It has been extensively carved to resemble three twisted branches, with the center having simulated thorns. The design is VERY well executed.
This is what Victor McLagen in the 1952 MOVIE “THE QUIET MAN” starring John Wayne and Maureen O’hara.
Very well made from some Irish hardwood, ready to display!
A shillelagh (/ʃɪˈleɪli/ shi-LAY-lee or /ʃɪˈleɪlə/ shi-LAY-lə; Irish: sail éille [ˈsalʲ ˈeːl̠ʲə], “thonged willow”) or blackthorn stick is a wooden walking stick and club or cudgel, typically made from a stout knotty stick with a large knob at the top. It is associated with Ireland and Irish folklore.
