Original Item: Only One Available. This is a very nice example of a British brass-barreled Blunderbuss, as used in the Royal Navy of the 18th Century. The lock is maker marked IORDAN / 1747 on the tail of the lock, indicating production in 1747 by maker “Jordan”. This maker worked in LONDON from 1733 until 1760, and was known for making these NAVAL BLUNDERBUSSES, many of which were acquired by the Royal Navy for use on their Men-o-War Battleships.
The blunderbuss has all brass mounts including Naval fold over sheet butt plate secured by nails, brass trigger guard, with Naval circular front mount and tailed Military side plate. The frizzen is not fitted with the later pan support bar and the barrel is secured with a tang screw rising from the front of the trigger guard. All of these are very early features.
The lock is marked with royal cypher CROWN / GR, for King George II, who ruled from 1727 to 1760. There is also the correct “Lock Viewer’s” marking under the pan. The gun’s barrel bears London Proof Marks, including the CROWN / CP black powder proof and the CROWN / V viewing mark. There may also be a maker mark on the barrel between the proofs, but it is not legible.
The Walnut butt stock has a nice nice grain in a fine honey color, making this a very early and highly desirable Naval Blunderbuss. There is a repair above the front of the lock, and there is also a repaired crack on the front right side near the muzzle. The hammer action is strong, and the lock functions well, holding at half cock and firing at full.
Fullly cleaned and serviced, this is ready to display. A worthy addition to any British Naval collection!
