Original Item: Only One Available. This Fireman’s Bayonet is in very good condition throughout, and is the 10-inch blade “long” version. The nickel hilt plating is bright throughout and remains 90% intact, with just some wear and light oxidation in places. The grip plates are the checkered black Bakelite type, in excellent condition and retained by plated steel rivets with dressed obverse heads.
The long blade is a fine example, with a high quality nickel plated finish. It is in good condition and has wide fuller construction, with the only wear being from the runners, seen around the tip near the fuller. The ricasso of the blade has an oval shaped maker mark that reads:
CARL WÜSTHOF
SOLINGEN
Solingen, Germany is a city famous since the middle ages for its metal-working and craftsmanship in sword making. Per J. Anthony Carter’s fine work GERMAN SWORD AND KNIFE MAKERS, Carl Wüsthof KG, Gladiatorwerk (Gladiator works) was founded in 1895 by one of the branches of the Wüsthof family. They made all types of cutlery through both World Wars, and operated into the 21st century. The original black leather blade buffer is in place and in great shape.
The scabbard is quite nice and still has over 80% of the original black enamel paint, with some checking and crazing between the chipped areas. There are no dents, and just light wear, though the frog button is loose. The body is held by the included black leather frog, which is in very good used condition, with minimal finish cracking. All of the stitching looks to be intact, and it fits the scabbard nicely.
A nice, complete example here, ready to display!
