Original Item: One of a Kind. This was just acquired from a collector at a large military collection. This is a very nice German WWII Cigarette case, made from aluminum, which was made to Commemorate their service in Africa. The outside of the case has one side that is marked EGYPT, with an image of a mosque over a red background, and the other side is marked AFRIKA, with an outline of the continent with a blue background. The interior is INTRICATELY engraved with images from Africa, and looks to be named to F. POHL or something similar amidst 6 flowers. Truly a work of art.
The case itself measures approximately 4 1/8″ x 3 1/8″ x 1/2″, and the latch and hinge are fully functional. The original elastic strap on the inside of the case is still present as well, though it is a bit loose now that the rubber inside has degraded.
A wonderful piece of German WWII Militaria!
The Afrika Korps or German Africa Corps (Deutsches Afrikakorps or DAK) was the German expeditionary force in Africa during the North African Campaign of World War II. First sent as a holding force to shore up the Italian defense of their African colonies, the formation fought on in Africa, under various appellations, from March 1941 until its surrender in May 1943. Both the Heer and Luftwaffe branches of the Wehrmacht wore uniforms specifically designed for the conditions in the more arid climate.
