Original Items: One of a Kind Collector’s Set. This is a fantastic possibly once in a lifetime opportunity to purchase a fantastic U-Boat Collector’s set, consisting of items that belonged to the Captain of U-415 and U-953, Herbert A. Werner. For more information on his U-Boat service in the Kriegsmarine please see his entry on Uboat – Oberleutanant zur See Herbert A. Werner.
Werner survived the war, and moved to the United States in 1957, eventually becoming an American Citizen, as mentioned in his Wikipedia article. In 1968 he published the best selling memoir Iron Coffins, an account of his time in the U-boat service. He eventually relocating to Vero Beach, Florida before passing away in 2013 at the age of 92, and these items all appear to have come from his estate. They consist of both WWII Period items, as well as post-war reference materials related to U-boats, many of them signed / dedicated to Werner. This really is a treasure trove of information, not just on Werner, but on the German WWII U-boat program in general! It is very rare we get groupings with such great research and display potential!
The Original WWII German items in this set include:
– German WWII 1939 dated copy of Von der SDP zur NSDAP, which is a propaganda book written to help transition ethnic Germans in the German Sudetenland Party into the NSDAP.
– A German WWII Kriegsmarine ink stamp, marked MARINE HOCHSCHULE / FLENSBURG MÜRWIK around a Reichsadler Eagle. This was for the Naval University in the Mürwik area of Flensburg, on the Northern Coast of Germany.
– A 1942 dated German handwritten document, which looks to possibly be a listing of people. possibly members of a crew, or fellow classmates for U-Boat School. There is a piece of yellow bullion strapping on the right side, with a red wax seal holding it in place.
– German WWII Iron Cross 1st Class with Award Document named to Herbert Werner, dated 18. Dezember 1943. It has all the correct signatures and stamps, and the award itself is marked with L/13 on the pin, for maker Paul Meybauer of Berlin.
– One German WWII Kriegsmarine Metal U-Boat War Badge – U-Boot-Kriegsabzeichen.
– One German WWII Kriegsmarine Marked 1.5m x 2.5m Reichskriegsflagge Naval Battle Flag. This flag is properly Eagle / M proofed, and marked Reichskriegsflg. 1.5 X 2.5 on the header. This size flag is an “7”, as noted in the Kriegsmarine Flaggenbuch (Navy Flag Book), which would be for a ship 500 to 1500 tons, so it could have been used on a U-boat. Unfortunately there is no way to definitively prove this, but it is definitely a used example, so it did see service during the war.
– A hand made carved wooden container with the insignia of the 1st Uboat Flotilla carved into the top of it. Inside is a seafaring day tinnie and the insignia from a Kriegsmarine cap.
The post war items in this set include:
– A white commemorative mug named to Werner, with details from his U-Boat service.
– A 9″x 7″ Shield Shaped Painted Wall Plaque with the insignia of the U-415. The rear is marked with lots of handwritten information.
– A 9″x 7″ Shield Shaped Painted Wall Plaque with the insignia of the 1st U-boat Flotilla (1. Unterseebootsflottille) with 1.U.Fl. at the bottom. The rear is marked with lots of handwritten information.
– A 9″x 7″ Shield Shaped Painted Wall Plaque with the insignia of the 9th U-boat Flotilla (9. Unterseebootsflottille) with 9.U.Fl. at the bottom. The rear is marked with lots of handwritten information.
– A well-used copy of DAS SCHICKSAL der deutschen U-Boote 1939-1945 (The fate of the German U-boats 1939-1945). We do not know if this book was owned by Werner, but it is marked up extensively, and the interior front page is a listing of the U-boats that Werner was on, and their commanders.
– A modern photo of Werner, which looks to be of a signed print in a book. The rear details his U-boat service, and is signed by Werner and dated 21/01/90.
-A Photo of a U-boat underway, though there is no information indicating which U-boat it is of.
– A signed 11″ x 14″ print of the USS WHALE (SSN 638) U.S. Navy Nuclear Attack Submarine. It is signed by the Commanding Officer Commander Clayton K. Morse, and written to Capt. Werner. Research indicates that Morse took command of the USS WHALE in 1978, though this photo may be from after that.
– A Signed Dedicated copy of EMBLEME WAPPEN MALINGS DEUTSCHER U-BOOTE 1939-1945 (Emblems and Decorations of the German U-Boat Fleet 1939-1945).
– A well-used copy of DAS U-BOOT als Kriegs- und Handels- Schiff (The Submarine as a War and Merchant Ship).
