Original Item: Only One Available. This is a very nice example of an original trench fighting knife with scabbard, as used by the Germans in WWI. The design features a full tang with an all wood ribbed hilt secured by two pins. The knife has a single edged drop point knife of 5 5/8″, with a false edge on the top. The blade is not marked, but it is very similar to the knives made by DEMAG of Duisberg.
The condition of the blade is good, with the expected wear from service and age. It looks to have been sharpened several times, and has definitely seen use in the field. The tip is a bit rounded, however it is still quite sharp on the main edge. The blade buffer is missing, and the “S” shaped cross guard unfortunately has the lower portion broken off right at the edge of the blade.
The knife comes in an genuine rolled steel World War One scabbard, which originally had a leather belt loop attached, which is now broken off at the rivets. The black enamel finish on the scabbard has mostly flaked off, and it has an overall oxidized patina currently. There is also a pinch dent right by the scabbard tip, however this does not impair sheathing the knife.
A very nice example for display in any quality German edged weapons collection.
