Original Item: One-of-a-kind. These maps and map case were brought home by Arthur Miller who served with The American Expeditionary Force (AEF) attached to Ambulance Company #168, 117th Sanitary Train, 42nd Division (Rainbow). According to the old museum tag, which we would estimate to date from circa the 1940s-1950s. The tag reads as follows:
AUTHENTIC
WAR MAPS
Taken from a German General by
Arthur H. Miller
168th Amb. Co.
RAINBOW DIVISION
WORLD WAR I
The lot of maps consists of a mix of German and French published maps, which would be consistent with them being used by a German Staff Officer, as captured French maps and other intelligence-related items were repurposed for German use. The Maps included consists of the following:
French Maps: Epinal, Mirecourt, Luneville, Commercy, Bar-Le-Duc, Wassy, Metz, Paris, Nancy, three (3) Civilian published road maps.
German Maps: Official 18th Army Corps Map, Western Front Map dated 1917, and sections of other maps.
Nearly all the maps are inscribed with Miller’s name, position (Wagoneer-wagon or truck driver), and his unit.
The map case appears to have been hung up somewhere, possibly within Miller’s Ambulance, by the means of a rawhide strap which has been tied to shorten the strap itself. The map case is in very worn condition, with the original celluloid interior shattered and broken.
An fascinating piece for the WWI Collector with much more research potential.
