Original Item: Only One Available. This is a very nice example of a M-1884/98 Third Model Bayonet (Seitengewehr), intended for use on the Mauser GEW 98 rifle. This bayonet design is based on the earlier M1871/84 bayonet with a 10 inch blade, and the first model of these were converted from those bayonets. This example was purpose made for the GEW 98, and was not converted. The sawback version of these are very rare, and seldom seen. The third model of the M1884/98 became the standard bayonet for the k98k rifle used during WWII.
This example has a very nice set of original wood grips, with a very nice hilt with a little rust and a great patina. Bayonet lock is fully functional. The blade ricasso is clearly maker marked:
S/245
8542
The blade ricasso is marked with the Zahlencode (number code) that was used from 1925-1940 to obscure manufacturers, and often had a date suffix after them, though this does not. Code S / 245 indicates manufacture by AG für Feinmechanik vorm. Jetter & Scheerer located in Tuttlingen, Württemberg. The Spine marking 36 indicates 1936 manufacture. 8542 is the serial number located on the reverse side of the ricasso. There are also Waffenamt markings on the pommel.
The all steel scabbard bears the same serial number as the blade and is marked 8542 on the throat. Much of the original finish is retained and there is no significant damage present. The attached leather frog is in lovely condition with minor wear but does show age from storage. The reverse of the belt loop is unit marked but unfortunately is too worn to read properly.
This is truly a lovely example of a nearly unissued condition bayonet with the proper matching scabbard! Comes more than ready for display.
