Original Item: One-Of-A-Kind. This is a wonderful German family photo album with what looks to be all personal snapshots, and dates that span from around 1902 all the way to the immediate post war era. We very rarely see albums that span such a large period of time! The pictures cover the Pre-WWI period, WWI, the Weimar period, the Pre-War NSDAP period, WWII itself, and then even some of the immediate post war Germany. There are pictures of soldiers from WWI, as well as some from WWII, and lots in between.
The album is covered in a lovely multi-colored fabric cover, and measures approximately 9 3/4″ x 7″, with what could be hand drawn symbols on the front cover. It features 25 pages for photos, most of which are separated by lovely spiderweb pattern “onion-skin” separators, which keeps the photos from sticking together. Even the insides of both covers have photos mounted to them! A total of 163 personal photographs fill this album, all held in place with period adhesive or corner tabs, though some have had the corners start to pull up. The dates are added with a calligraphy pen, and really help tell the story, as not all of the photos are in order.
Historical records like this album have become priceless time capsules that provide an incomparable level of insight into the experience in Germany during the first half of the 20th century. We’ve never had an album quite like this before!
Comes more than ready for further research and display!
The older albums such as these usually withstand the ravages of time. The leather or fabric covers may wear, but the pages stay well intact. The black paper albums of the early 20th century are more fragile, while the glue from magnetic albums can damage photographs. And, as with all old photographs, keep albums in a safe, climate controlled environment.
