Original Item: Only One Available. This is something that we have not seen before! In use for centuries, the German Hirschfänger (Deer Catcher) long hunting daggers have always made lovely display pieces, as well as military sidearms. Many of the early bayonets used by the various German States were based on the Hirschfänger design, which is both simple and elegant, almost a short sword in practical terms.
This is very nice German Interwar Era hunting knife, with design features that really hearken back to the Hirschfänger style, though definitely in a simplified form. It has art deco style acorn finials on the straight crossguard, and on the end of the slightly curved handle, which has horn grip panels. The knife’s fittings are all brass, and show the typical German ornamented style, especially on the bottom of the pommel. It comes with a lovely brass fit leather scabbard in a German style belt frog.
The blade is a standard straight spear-point example, single edged with a false edge on the spine side. It is quite sturdy, measuring 4.6mm thick at the ricasso, and features a hollow ground cutting edge. This would have been suitable for use against both game and we suspect also enemy combatants. It is in very good condition, still showing the original factory final polish grind on almost the entire blade, with little sign of sharpening. There is just a it of oxidation in areas.
The scabbard is of the typical German style, brown leather fit with brass, with a very nice brown leather frog. It fits the knife perfect, and has a matching lightly oxidized patina on the brass.
A very nice Hunting knife from the inter war period, ready to display or even use!
