Original Item: Only One Available. This is a truly FINE German AXE. It currently has a very short off set haft, so it can be used for the preparation of square sided wooden logs for use in construction. HOWEVER these were made with another possible use in mind. These were often attached to long stout wooden hafts in time of War, and became BILL HOOKS/AXES. The blade’s cutting edge is over 16 inches in length and the axe’s head is deeply punched with FOUR ARMORER’S MARKS, all identical.
The 15th/16th and 17th centuries were times of want and need, everything made had to have multiple uses especially in an era of continual warfare. I pity the Cavalryman being hit with one of these Axes during a battle, it really brings the term “POLE AXING” into focus.
In lovely matured condition, ready to display!
