Original Item: Only One Available. This is a very rare French M-1777 / ANIX Flintlock Dragoon Musket, which bears a manufacture date of 1808 at the rear part of the 40 3/4″ Barrel. The lock is very clearly marked :-
Liège
Manuf’re Imp’le
Today Liège is a major city in Belgium, but during the Napoleonic Wars it was not independent, and completely dominated by the French. The lock plate is also proof marked CROWN / M / 12. The musket has an overall length of 55 3/4″, and features a mixture of Brass and Iron mounts, including the tell tale “Double ringed” center band, indicating it was made for Dragoons. The left butt stock is clearly stamped T : 15 just behind the cheek cutout, denoting the French 15th Dragoon Regiment. There is also still the remains of a stock roundel on the right butt stock, and most components of the gun have proof marks.
The musket is in basically untouched condition since coming from long term display at a Military Museum, and comes complete with iron ramrod. Both sling swivels are present and movable. The flintlock mechanism itself functions perfectly, holding at half cock and firing at full. There is even a very old piece of leather holding a flint in the jaws of the ring neck cock, though we do not know if this is original Napeolonic era.
The 15th Dragoons were commanded by COLONEL CLAUDE LOUIS CHAILLOT and fielded 323 men on the day, 36 Officers and 287 other ranks, and were part of the 2nd CAVALRY CORPS.
It is very unusual to find any French Flintlock musket marked Regimentally in our experience, let alone to a Regiment that took part in the famous Battle of WATERLOO in June 1815, where Napoleon suffered his final defeat. We have decided to offer this important musket in its current very good condition and feel that with a little TLC it would clean up to a really fine display condition.
These are extremely rare, and this is the first example that we have had.
