Original Item: One-of-a-kind. This lovely French flintlock musketoon is the Pattern of 1777, however dates from the late Napoleonic period of 1810. It no doubt traveled to the Middle East, maybe Turkey, and was modified to take a much earlier Jezail Barrel of high quality measuring 33″, which has lovely silver inlay around the breech area. This then increased the overall length to 48 1/2″.
Brass mounted military weapons in France did NOT indicate Naval use as in Great Britain but meant the weapon was for Colonial issue. The Jezail barrel is of great quality and may date to the early part of the 1700s. It was at hand when the weapon was sent out to part of the Second French Colonial Empire, which involved areas of North Africa as well as the middle east. All of these are areas where a Jezail could be found.
The musketoon is in great shape, fully cleaned to put it in the best light. The French lock has proof marks, though we do not recognize them. It has the proper brass flash pan of the period, and is fully functional, holding at half cock and firing at full.
A very rare and interesting weapon that may very well have seen service in the SULTAN’s household. In lovely overall condition ready to display.
