Original item. Only One Available. This is a very interesting example of the French Modèle 1816 Flintlock pistol, released just after the end of the Napoleonic wars. In design it is nearly identical to the later Modèle 1822, except that is is about 3/4 inches longer. This example is in lovely condition, and is still in the original flintlock configuration, though the hammer appears to have been repaired or replaced at some point with a non-original example. Almost all of these transitional models were later shortened to the Mle 1822 standard. These in turn were usually converted to percussion, and then often later rifled as well.
We were not able to find any markings on the exterior of this pistol, and the texture on the metalwork suggests that the markings were removed at some point. It is possible that the pistol was made prior to 1816, and then was taken as spoils of war. It also may have been exported, which usually first involved removing the military markings. The pistol is all brass fitted, correct for the pattern, and measures 14 1/2 inches in overall length, with a 8 1/2 inch .69″ caliber smoothbore barrel.
This is a very nice service used example of French Flintlock pistol, made just after the Napoleonic era. The lock is functional, though it will fire at both half and full cock. The top jaw of the replaced cock is fully functional, and is currently fitted with an original flint. The pistol still has a ramrod, though it does not have the correct cupped head, so it looks to be a period replacement. The barrel is in very good condition, still showing the original machining marks, and just a bit of light oxidation. The stock is in very good condition, showing just a bit of denting and wear.
A very nice example of a hard to find French pistol, still in the original flintlock configuration. Ready to research and display!
