Original item: One Only. Up until the end of the 18th Century Belgium did not exist: it was made up of several small states which were controlled mostly by the Germans , Dutch and Austrians.
In 1794 following The Battle of FLEURUS this territory was annexed by Imperial France, which was confirmed in the Treaty of CAMPO FORMIO in 1797. The great Gun manufacturing plants in LIEGE now became fully under French Control and all weapons thereafter were marked Manu. de Impl. a Liege.
After the final defeat of Napoleon in 1815 at Waterloo, what we now call Belgium became part of the New United Kingdom of the Netherlands. This lasted until 1830 when a Revolution started, ousting King William 1st of the House of Orange and three separate Countries were formed: BELGIUM, THE NETHERLANDS (HOLLAND) AND LUXEMBOURG. In 1830. Belgium’s new monarch was King Leopold 1st. and Uncle to Queen Victoria.
This Dragoon Cavalry Carbine was first produced about 1805 in Flintlock for the French Dragoons/Chasseurs and then later, about 1825, converted to Percussion cap, but retained it’s earlier lock markings of “Manu.de Impl a Liege”. It very likely saw service up to and including the CRIMEAN WARS of 1854/55, when the British allied with the French against the Russians over Turkey. The Carbine is in excellent condition with steel mounts and a brass nose cap. Deliberately made with short wood fore end to fit into a leather saddle scabbard on the dragoons left hand side. It was designed to accept a socket bayonet but these were extremely unpopular and mostly discarded.
Overall very nice condition, fully cleaned and ready to display.
