Original item. Only One Available. This is a fantastic late 17th – early 18th century flintlock holster pistol, from a well-known London Maker. Known to have made Holster Pistols for Queen’s Anne’s Army, John Sibley became one of London’s premier Gun Makers by the end of the 17th Century. He also made guns under contract for the Hudson Bay Company.
Our flintlock pistol here has all iron mounts, the lock, the butt cap and the trigger guard being engraved in 17th century floral designs. The barrel measures 12 1/4″ in length giving the pistol 19 1/2″in overall length. The somewhat sculpted wood stock is Walnut. The iron escutcheon shows a 17th century man’s head wearing a plumed hat. The side plate, also of iron, is open worked.
The lock plate has lovely floral engraving, possibly with a Thistle motif in places. It bears the maker name of I. SIBLEY at the bottom. As was the custom of the time, the initial J was “Latinized” to I, which did not have the letter J. The barrel bears makers initials I.S. and is also marked on the top with LONDINI, the Latinization of London. The left facet of the breech end bears London proof house marks.
In all this is a very appealing late 17th. Century English Flintlock pistol fully cleaned and ready to display.
