Original Item: Only One Available. This is a very nice early American Brass framed Tinder Lighter, complete with its original monopod stand. It measures just about 6 3/4″ in length and 3 3/4″ in height. The internal and functional components are made of the usual iron and steel. It is fully marked on the sides of the box lock with T. ALLEN on one side and NEW YORK on the other.
These were first used as fire lighters by the flint striking a spark on the frizzen, which ignited the “tinder” in the trough or pan below. Tinder was usually fine shards of cotton or similar which was easily set afire with a spark. Once ignited the pan’s now burning tinder was tipped into the laid fireplace to soon burst into a good blaze.
Later example such as this featured a storage compartment for additional tinder, covered by a small spring retained brass door. The compartment is about 2 1/2″ long on this example, and is marked on the top with John Parker Tavern. It seems to be fully functional, holding at half cock and firing at full. We have however not tested it for its ability to light tinder.
Research tells us that this tavern was in what we know today as Bernardsville, New Jersey and for years was the town’s small library. It still stands today with various additions and is now a retail store.
Probably dating from the very early days before the U.S. Revolutionary war. A fascinating item well worth serious research, in very nice condition for 250 years of age.
