Original Item: Only One Available. This is a standard French Model of 1842 Short Artillery Rifled Musket with a back action lock, just received out of a large collection. These were imported in large numbers by the Confederate States during the Civil war, which is probably how it ended up in the United States. It is fully steel mounted and does bear a faint maker marking on the lock plate: Mre R’le / de Maubeuge, indicating manufacture at the Royal French Arsenal located in Maubeuge.
The barrel is 40 1/2″ in length and the rifled musket is 56″ overall. Powder burn and wear have obliterated all of the markings that would normally be on the barrel and stock. The all iron mounts have no finish remaining on the metalwork. Very sound walnut stock with the expected wear and dents from age.
The lock functions, but does not have a half-cock position, so it definitely needs some work. The ramrod is also missing, as with many muskets of this age. Straight out of long storage, this musket is ready to clean or display as is!
