Original Item: One of a Kind. This is a large, 14″ X 7″ wooden Cribbage scorekeeping board with Brass top, able to accommodate THREE Cribbage Players at the same time. It is solidly constructed of a hard wood base with a large Brass scoring surface on top. The stand has four wooden button feet and on the underside of the wood base it is unit marked and dated:
R.C.M.P.
SGTS MESS
ROMAN WAY BKS
COLCHESTER
1942
The COLCHESTER being referred to is in ENGLAND, not COLCHESTER in Ontario, Canada, although both are predominantly Military towns. The Site of the “ROMAN WAY BARRACKS” is in fact a site where Julius Caesar’s Roman Legions held a stronghold for almost 400 years, starting more than 2,000 years ago.
Awaiting the D-Day Invasion, masses of Canadian troops were billeted in England in the early 1940’s and on D-Day itself the CANADIANS all landed at JUNO BEACH in NORMANDY. These guys (R.C.M.P.) were the MP’s of the Canadian army (ROYAL CANADIAN MOUNTED POLICE), although we can assume that none of them had horses with which to invade NSDAP Europe.
In very nice condition this no doubt helped wind away those long hours before the Invasion of June 6th. 1944. Ready to Display (and use).
