Original Items: One Lot Only. A Pair of English Pewter Measures used for ALCOHOL DISTRIBUTION to Military Units in WW1 offered together with an Original WW1 era British Ceramic Issue “Rum Jug”. Both Pewter measures bear the maker marks of: “Caswell & Chambers (London) Ltd”, the Pint bears the date of “1915” and the Half Pint the date of “1917” each shows a “Broad Arrow” War Department acceptance stamp. The Original Ceramic Rum Jug is not and never was specifically dated however, it bears the WW1 initials “S.R.D.” for Special Rations Department which the Tommie?s soon interpreted to stand for: “Soon Runs Dry” or “Seldom Reaches Destination”. History tells that the use of Alcohol is always widespread in wartime. A little “Dutch Courage” certainly helped when going “over the top” in the face of enemy Machine Guns. However, it is also sadly true that Military Authorities were not generous and these Pewter Measures were essential when “cutting? Military Issue Rum with water to dilute the rum when given to the unfortunate Tommie?s who were being asked to possibly make the ultimate sacrifice for their Country. On offer is a very rare pair of Original British Military Marked and WW1 Dated Pewter Rum Measures together with an Original WW1 era British Military Issue Ceramic Rum Jug making a desirable WW1 Collectible Set.
