Original Item: One of a Kind. This is a very nice Sterling Silver match safe, with a lovely embossed “Mermaid” on the front side. Over this on the lid it is marked SYREN, and on the rear of the lid is Commander Green. The match safe measures approximately 2 1/4″ x 1 3/8″ x 3/8″, and is in really great shape. There is a nice hanger ring on the side for attachment to a chain, and it has a great spring loaded lid that stays securely shut.
The top under the lid is marked with the following British Hallmarks: “Anchor”, “Capital S in an Oval”, “Lion”, and “Victoria’s Head”. These are hallmarks from the British city of Birmingham, and the “Capital S” in an oval is the date code for 1867.
The only British Military ship we can find that this might possibly be is HMS Siren (1841), a 16-gun Helena-class brig-sloop, launched in 1841 and broken up by 1868.
Definitely some great research potential hear, as well as being a great display piece!
