Original Item: Only One Available. This is a very nice Victorian Era Pattern 1827 Royal Navy Officers Sword, with a lovely etched 28 1/4″ inch long “Pipe backed” blade, also called the “Quill Back” or “key hole shape” (cross section) blade. The design is classic and very attractive.
The sword features a solid “Gothic” style half basket guard, which bears the Queen’s Crown over a “Fouled Anchor”, the emblem of the Victorian Navy. It has a a partial fold-down guard, which made it more comfortable to wear on the hip. The grip is wrapped with ray skin and bound with copper wires, and the pommel is a very attractive “Lion’s Head” design. There is quite a bit of the original gilding still present.
The blade at one time had lovely etching on both sides, however it unfortunately has become oxidized and faded in many areas. This makes many of the designs quite hard to see. However the maker/retailer name can still be read:
BATTEN
~ & Co. ~
Devonport
The ricasso on the other side side is etched with:
Warranted
London
Made
Batten & Co. is most likely the retailer, who would buy raw blades from London sword makers, and then etch and fit them to scabbards and hilts. There is a faint PVL stamped on the spine of the blade, but we do not know if this was the makers initials or not. It could be PV of London or something similar.
The sword comes with a brass-fit leather scabbard, which is still in good shape, with bright gild fittings, and two hanger loops. The black leather still has a good finish, though it does have bends in two locations, which make it somewhat delicate.
A very nice Victorian Era Military sword, ready to add to your collection!
