Original Item. Only One Available. This is technically classed as a “Bowie” knife or Dirk, albeit a very small one, made in SHEFFIELD, the cutlery Capitol of England. There were many of the Sheffield cutlers who made these in the 19th century and most had a 4-5″ blade and were 7 1/2-9″ overall. They were made to order, so they varied significantly in size, shape, and form. This example is marked MANSON / SHEFFIELD on the blade ricasso, and was probably made between 1840 and 1860.
The blade is a spear point style, and is just 5″ long and with full double edges, typical of the style. The blade is decorated with floral etching and the Motto:
NEVER DRAW ME WITHOUT REASON
NOR SHEATH ME WITHOUT HONOUR
The hilt is Silver plated over a base metal but might just be solid silver as it is somewhat tarnished. The overall length of the dagger is just 9″. It comes in a silver mounted red leather scabbard with some gold line decoration, the small clip on the top mount no doubt to hook onto a garter belt is now missing.
These were what were commonly used by professional ladies for self protection, whilst plying the oldest profession in the World. In nice matured condition with a small amount of pitting, ideal for slicing apples. Its original purpose of rib tickling or neck shaving is not recommended.
A top quality item over 150 years old. Lovely patina, Ready to display.
