Original Items: One of a Kind Set. This is an early type of color photograph of a bearded British Naval Officer sitting holding his sword, along with his named telescope. The background is that Captain Cuthbert Robert Buckle was the master of H.M.S. CRACKER, and he retired a Commander in 1875. After his service he sailed commercial vessels to South America from Liverpool.
The brass framed photograph, probably hand colored, measures 6 1/2″ tall by 5″ wide. The telescope is made of brass with a wood barrel cover and is an early Two draw variety, measuring 15″ when closed and 35″ when fully extended. It still gives a good image, though one of the lenses is slightly chipped on the edge. The telescope extends and collapses smoothly.
It is maker marked on the inner draw of the telescope, near the eyepiece:
J. Ponisi, London
Day or Night
Also engraved on the brass barrel is:
Capt. C.R. Buckle. R.N.
The sliding lens cover to the eye piece is now absent but this does not interfere with the operation of the instrument. A very nice companion Naval Set of Named telescope and hand colored photograph of a known Victorian Royal Naval Captain.
Rare grouping and ready to display.
