Original Item: Only One Available. Here we have a substantial P-1796 Heavy Dragoon pistol, with a massive .75″ bore, the same as the standard musket of the liner during the Napoleonic wars. Please see British Military Pistols and Associated Edged Weapons by Robert Brooker, page 145 for a nearly identical pistol. This pistol definitely dates to prior the Battle of Waterloo, and is marked to the rear of the wrist with CROWN / GR / 1806.
The pistol is a standard full stocked heavy flintlock pistol which conforms well to the P-1796 standard, used by British Dragoons across the empire. The Lock Plate is marked (CROWN) / G.R. under the pan, with TOWER in an arc across the tail, indicating acceptance at the tower armory. There is a CROWNED BROAD ARROW under the pan, the standard “Lock Viewer’s” mark of the time. The barrel bears the correct CROWN / GR proof as well as the CROWN / CROSSED SCEPTERS proof markings for manufacture in Birmingham, England by William Ketland, which after 1813 became the proof mark for all of Birmingham produced guns.
The ramrod is iron, and not of the ‘swivel” type later introduced as the New Land Pattern, which was based on East India Company innovations. The pistol has a 9″ long .75″ bore barrel, and the minimally fitted stock looks just lovely. There is a crack to the rear of the lock plate, and also the stock has a split along the ramrod channel near the nose. The lock is in good shape and functional, however it will fire at both half and full cock due to wear on the tumbler.
A highly desirable Flintlock Heavy Dragoon Pistol from the Napoleonic Wars, ready to display!
