Original Item: One of a Kind. This is a very elegantly made brass mounted Horse’s Hoof Inkwell, with glass interior ink container, dating to the early 19th Century. It bears a very nice Silver plaque stating:-
BRUTUS
Ridden by Lt. J. Wemyss at Waterloo
Died 1821
JAMES WEMYSS was born in Fife, Scotland on July 14 1789 – the day a Parisian mob stormed the Bastille and set in train a revolutionary chain of events which would shape his life. Born into a military family, he was commissioned into the Royal Scots Greys in 1810, rising to the rank of lieutenant by the end of 1812 and seeing action throughout the Napoleonic Wars.
Wemyss was a Subaltern Lieutenant in Captain James Poole’s Troop at the Battle of WATERLOO on June 18th 1815. As luck would have it, it fell to him to Command his troop in the final Charge at Waterloo. Though severely wounded in the arm, he led his men into the midst of the conflict. He was then promoted Captain on October 10th 1816, to Major on June 10th 1826 and he retired in 1827. He was appointed High Constable of Durham and died in Durham on October 1st 1847. From the silver plaque we know that his mount BRUTUS died in 1821.
A truly great item from the great Battle of Waterloo from an Officer who was nearly killed in the action. In lovely condition and ready to display!
