Original Item: One Only. Out from our Nepal Palace purchase of 2003, this is a spectacular example of this scarce British East India Company .75″ Short Musket issued in 1846-54. This Short Musket was made in England, and is marked faintly with CROWN / GR on the barrel. It also is marked with the CROWN / V mark, indicating it was viewed at the proof house. Just in front of the cap bolster there is another marking, but we cannot decipher it.
The lock itself bears the E.I.C. trade mark “Rampant Lion with Crown “, introduced in 1808. The stock itself is marked HOLDER on the underside of the butt stock. The stock has just two brass ram rod pipes, with no throat pipe, and features all brass mounts throughout. Comes complete with iron ram rod and does not have any bayonet catch spring, so it is closest to a model C. There are traces of regimental markings on the left side of the butt stock, from before it was issued to Nepal.
Included with the musket is a very rare Grenade Thrower, made for the British East India Company, and recieved with our purchase from the palace Lagan Silikhana in Kathmandu, Nepal in 2003. This example bears the E.I.C. Heart Logo over which it is dated 1776.
The socket section that fits over the musket barrel is very heavily checkered and unfortunately the E.I.C. locking spring arm/catch is absent. The side does not have any contractor marking or Nepalese script, so the manufacturer is unfortunately unknown. These were received by Royal Nepalese Army as part of some much needed Brown Bess military aid in 1816 after the Treaty of Seguli.
All original, fully cleaned and ready to display!
See “SMALL ARMS OF THE EAST INDIA COMPANY” Volume II Page 258/259 by David Harding for further information. A truly wonderful publication.
