Original Item: Only One Available. This is a fascinating Third Model Brown Bess Musket with standard 39-inch long barrel and a .75-inch bore. The stock is walnut, mounts are all brass, and trigger guard has a “ball” front projection indicating that the musket was built for the Royal Navy. The lock is marked with a Crown over G.R. and reads “Tower” across the tail. The musket shows use but is in overall a very good display condition.
The barrel bears the engraving H.M.S. AFRICA which was a 64-gun warship built in 1781 at Depford near London. It’s most memorable action was at The Battle of Trafalgar in 1805 when commanded by Captain Henry Digby. Of the compliment of 498 men, eight were killed during the engagement and forty four wounded. H.M.S. Africa was broken up in 1814.
A jolly interesting British Naval Brown Bess Musket that may have seen service during Britain’s most famous Naval victory.
