Original Item: One of a Kind. This is a very nice British Royal Navy bronze swivel cannon barrel, made circa 1780. The 23 1/2 inch long barrel features a 1 3/8″ smooth bore and measures 5 1/2″ across trunnions. There are multiple collars cast into the design along the length to keep it from splitting. These cannons were usually used on iron swivel mounts, often mounted to a ship’s rail. Really nice and clearly very old and surprisingly heavy.
These small cannons were most effective when loaded with canister shot (multiple balls), ideal to repel boarders. They could easily take out the bottom of any row boat, and would also devastate the boarding party. As they were relatively lightweight, they could easily be moved into the most effective position.
