Original Item: One-of-a-kind. The HMS Vigilant (1803) was a schooner, purchased in 1803 and sold in 1808. This large impressive copper serving pitcher stands 10.5 tall with large ear handle of typical sea going shape with a flared bottom. It measures 10 across at the base and only 6.5 across at the top rolled brim.
The front bears a large engraving of a fouled anchor amidst G.R. III with laurel leaf garland enclosed by stands of arms on either side. Underneath in a border is:
GOD BLESS
KING GEORGE
&
THE VIGILANT
1804
There is an old repair to the bottom front, not visible from above and the bottom itself shows some denting. Beautifully maintained to a great shine, clearly having be loved for many decades and most certainly on display. Extremely impressive and provides a glance into Horatio Nelson’s Royal Navy.
