Original British 1 Pounder Falconet Bronze Cannon with Cast Iron Winter Carriage Marked Liverpool England Original Items

Original Item: Only One Available. This is a really choice item, a cannon barrel with a beautiful deep bronze patina is classic English early 18th century production, perhaps 1740. It has a 2″ bore meaning it fired a one pound cannon ball, (One pound Cannon are referred to as “FALCONETS”), the barrel measures 33 1/2″ overall and is 7 5/8″ wide at the trunnions and is of classic proportions. This was most certainly earlier have been mounted as a swivel gun or on a wooden ship’s mount.

This and larger models were continually displayed in British Fortresses, including the Tower of London, during their working life while they guarded the Empire. In winter, however, with bad weather and snow the wooden combat carriages were taken inside the Arsenal and the Cannon remounted on what is known as a Winter Carriage.

This Winter Carriage, made of cast iron, is fitted with 36″ steel spoke wheels with the two cast iron trails that are made with copious decorations and is signed along both sides:

“FAWCETT PRESTON & CO. LIVERPOOL 1845”

The rear cross rung connecting both left and right trails has been detached at some stage but has now been reinstalled using steel pins to the correct position (our photographs show it detached, however it has been repaired). One Cap Lock Cover is absent. The Carriage even retains its original complete elevating system that was bolted to the rear of the cannon for use. The connecting bolt is absent and the head of the steel “Y” Connector is slightly pinched which needs to be reopened to accept the entire cannon flange.

Offered totally untouched and unrestored by us this early 18th century beautiful bronze 1lb cannon complete with an original Victorian Winter Carriage no doubt stood guard at the Tower of London in Victorian times or other Military installation as similar examples still do today.
