Original Belgian Massive Gasser Top Break .44cal Nickel Plated Revolver for Montenegro Trade – c.1885 Original Items

Original Item: Only One Available. These HUGE revolvers were very much favored in the Balkan State of MONTENEGRO in the late 19th century. They were almost considered as men’s jewelry. Our example is just lovely, and was originally fully nickel plated, and also has a very interesting “top break” design, actuated by twin lever locks behind the cylinder. It was made in BELGIUM as indicated on the top strap, and is in a nice large CAL 44 as indicated on the left side of the barrel.

Most likely, this revolver was made in the Belgian City of Liège, a city well-known for its firearms manufacturing industry. Numerous factories there produced contract arms for many companies and countries around Europe. There are some proof marks on the right side of the frame, but no serial numbers or other markings that we could find.

The grips very nice Bone, as often encountered due to preference, and they have matured to a lovely yellow color. The left grip looks to have some letters scratched into it, but we cannot make out anything besides “W A”. Overall the nickel plating is retained probably 60%, with most of the wear being on the left side and on the barrel. Most likely that was the side that rubbed against clothing when being worn.

The revolver breaks open correctly, with a functional ejector, and cycles correctly both single and double action. The bore shows clear lands and grooves, with a mostly bright finish. These revolvers were mostly for show, so most that we see have very little sign of actual use.
