Original Item: Only One Available. This is good example of an N.C.O’s Saber bayonet for the AUSTRIAN M-1867/M-1873 Werndl Rifle with an 18 1/2″ blade. It comes complete with it’s original steel scabbard, designed to fit the ‘Yataghan’ shaped blade. This is an early example as it is fitted with a leaf spring on the bayonet catch that was later replaced with an internal coil spring.
The Bayonet is stamped on the blade Œ / WG, the marking for Österreichische Waffenfabriksgesellschaft (Austrian Arms-Manufacturing Company), abbreviated as ŒWG. Steyr Mannlicher firearms production would be a division this company. It also has its Arsenal proof marks on the blade and regimental markings on the hook quillon of the cross guard of 79.8.4.B. / 15.89.
The hard rubber gutta percha checkered grip plates are in just perfect condition, and the rest of the bayone is in very good condition as well. Accompanied by its iron scabbard which shows old pitting scars from under where the leather throat frog had been, otherwise just fine.
