Original Item. Only One Available. In really great condition, this looks to be a Contract Remington Rolling Block Rifle was made for the South American State of ARGENTINA of 1879. This is quite a scarce rifle to find in today’s market. The receiver tang is marked faintly with E. REMINGTON & SONS, ILION, N.Y., U.S.A, along with the patent information. The model and date information would usually be listed on the barrel knoxform, however this example could be a pre-contract factory sample, or was refurbished at arsenal. The faint patent markings definitely points to an arsenal refurbish. It is also possible that it was never sent to Argentina, as it has no traces of the original nocks form markings, and snows little to no use based on the barrel condition.
We checked under the butt stock, where the serial numbers are marked, and it is marked H27322 on the upper receiver tang, while the trigger guard is marked H7495, further evidence that the rifle was refurbished at arsenal, using the best parts from several different guns.
Around the late 1800s Argentina was a developing world power, and had one of the largest economies in the world. Like any growing power, it needed arms, and as there were not yet local producers up to the task, they contracted out for their weaponry. They would later replace the rolling blocks with the more modern Argentine Contract Mauser rifles towards the end of the 1800s.
The rifle is complete with its ramrod and ladder back sight (very similar to a Werndl back sight), and is in excellent fully restored condition. The bluing is strong throughout, especially on the barrel bands, which almost look black. The finish on the barrel has got just a bit of peppering from age. The patent markings are a bit faint, but otherwise this is a great looking rifle.
The action cycles correctly, with a crisp dry fire. The ejector presents correctly, though we have not tested it on spent brass. The bore is in excellent condition, with a bright finish showing crisp lands and grooves with just a few spots of fouling. There is only the minor wear to the lands visible, so this rifle only saw very light use during service. The stock wood is in fantastic shape, and it looks like the stocks were replaced with unissued arsenal spares when it was refurbished. They show just a bit of light denting and wear.
A great example of the Argentine Model 1879 Rolling Block Rifle, fully arsenal restored and ready to add to your collection!
