Original Item. Only One Available. In good service worn condition, this Contract Remington Rolling Block Rifle was made for the South American State of ARGENTINA of 1879. This is quite a scarce rifle to find in today’s market. The receiver tang is worn, but traces of the original E. REMINGTON & SONS, ILION, N.Y., U.S.A address along with the patent information are still visible. The model and date information is listed on the barrel nocks form, and is mostly clear:
MODELO ARGENTINO. 1879 E.N.
The E.N. abbreviation is for the Ejercito Nacional, or National Army in Argentina. There are some other markings, but they are faded. Around the late 1800s Argentina was a developing world power, and had one of the largest economies in the world. Like any growing power, it needed arms, and as there were not yet local producers up to the task, they contracted out for their weaponry. They would later replace the rolling blocks with the more modern Argentine Contract Mauser rifles towards the end of the 1800s.
The rifle is complete with its ramrod and ladder back sight (very similar to a Werndl back sight), but definitely has seen much use, as the metalwork has had the original blued finish worn away. It is now all dull bright steel from cleaning and polishing, with some areas of light past pitting. The patent markings are partly worn away, and overall most of the markings are faint, if they are there at all.
The action cycles correctly, with a crisp dry fire. The bore is very good, with a mostly bright finish and clear lands and grooves, though there definitely is wear, and the breech block shows primer burn. This is a rifle that definitely saw years of active service. The stock has a lot of small dents and small chunks missing, commensurate with the wear on the rest of the rifle. There are some larger dents, but no major cracks or other issues.
A very nice service worn example of the Argentine Model 1879 Rolling Block Rifle.
