Original Item: Only One Available. This is a very nice 19th Century Swedish Officer’s Sword, which be believe may be a more upmarket version of the M1893 Cavalry Saber. It has the same basic shape, guard style, and blade style, however the basket around the grip is definitely more ornate, and the double edged spear-tip blade on this example is double fullered, compared to the single fuller we have seen on other examples. We have found other examples of this sword by the same maker labeled simply as “Swedish Officer’s Sword.
This example is in very good condition, and has a lovely 33 1/2 inch long blade, which shows only light wear with just a bit of oxidation. It bears the Swedish crown mark on the ricasso, as well as a GM inspector mark, which we have seen on other Swedish blades. It still retains the leather blade buffer, which partly covers the maker marking, which is also covered partly by the cross guard. However we can see enough of it to know that it reads as follows:
E. SVALLING
ESKILSTUNA
This is a known maker of blades in the late 19th century, and is the same maker marking we have observed on other examples of this saber.
The sword features a sturdy brass handguard that is open on both sides, which is perforated with some lovely designs. It bears an attached “Lesser Arms” of Sweden, showing the Crown over a shield which has three additional crowns on it. It looks to originally have been fully gilt, however much of that is now worn away, leaving a lovely mellow brass patina. The grip is leather wrapped wood, which is bound with two twisted pairs of gilt brass wire, still in great shape. Overall, the hilt is still firmly attached to the blade, and there is also a lovely leather sword knot tied around the hilt.
The scabbard is fairly standard in design, made from blued steel, and has a fitting on the top for a sword hanger, with a horizontal flat loop on the back for “hitching up” the sword when needed. The scabbard is in relatively good shape, but does have two large dents on the exterior, which do not interfere with sheathing the blade.
Overall an very nice condition Swedish M1893 officer’s saber with scabbard and sword knot, ready to research and display!
