Original item: Only One Available. Here we have a most impressive half stocked German style Jäger Percussion Rifle, very possibly made in the U.S. just before the Civil War. It features a very interesting Dog Catch safety on the hammer. It is elegantly brass mounted, with brass trim around the lock plate, and a side plate that covers the entire left side of the stock. The stock is lovely, with checkering around the wrist, though it is missing a long sliver of wood along right side of the barrel, which is not really of consequence. The rifle has a heavy buttstock with substantial brass hook butt plate, and no visible markings.
The rifle has a heavy octagonal barrel, which has a unique 16 groove rifling pattern. It is like 8 groove rifling, but there is a smaller groove in the middle of each of the lands. We’ve never seen a rifling pattern quite like this, and we assume it was custom made. The lock works well, holding at half cock, and firing at full. The safety is for the fully cocked position, though unfortunately it can get stuck on the brass trim around the barre. It has what looks to be an original ramrod, which has a threaded brass fitting on one end, and carved bone on the other.
A very nice example of an interesting Jäger percussion rifle, possibly used by sharpshooters during the U.S. Civil War. Very impressive and ready to display!
