Original Item. Only One Available. This is a great condition 19th Century British brass framed double barrel flintlock pocket pistol dating to approximately 1800, originating from the European Continent. It is made very much in the British “Queen Anne” style, and does not have any maker markings on the frame, but it has the late 18th century CROWN / P “proof” and CROWN / GP “gunmaker’s proof from the London Gun Company proof house on the bottom of both barrels. They are in ovals, as is typical for this era.
The weapon measures 7 ¾” in overall length with 2 ½” smooth bored brass barrels. There is some engraving on the sides of the “boxlock” action where often a name and location would be engraved, but nothing is shown. There are also some grafted in pieces of brass on the left, so possibly there was some additional functionality to the pistol, now removed. The frame, action and barrel are show a lovely yellowed brass patina. The end of the frame is fitted with a beautiful hardwood grip, which is very nicely tapered for a comfortable feel in the hand, and has a silver “shield” shaped escutcheon on the back. There is a small iron ramrod under the barrel, which looks to be original.
Mechanically, the action works great, with the hammer holding at half cock and firing at full. It also has a sliding half cock safety, which also serves to lock the frizzen in place over the pan, ensuring that it stays in place, avoiding having the powder spill out, definitely a plus for any flintlock pistol. There is also a sliding button on the right side of the frame, which moves an iron cover over the right side flash pan. This way, the user could fire the left barrel first, and then the right, or also both at the same time! This also means that only one trigger was required, definitely simplifying construction somewhat.
A very nice double barreled British flintlock pocket pistol from just before the turn of the 19th Century with some great features. Ready to display!
