Original Item: Only One Available. Here we have a lovely 17th Century Polearm / Spear head from the European Continent, one that we have had a bit of trouble classifying. It measures 17 3/8 inches in overall length, and has a substantial 11 1/4 inch long blade, which is about 0.31 inches thick near the tip. This was definitely not intended to be used as just a ceremonial item, like a spontoon usually was, but it conforms in shape very well to the spontoon and also a simplified partisan. Polearms and spears slowly evolved over time, so this may have been a simplified version intended to go on the end of a spear or maybe even a pike to penetrate mail and other light armor.
Condition is very good, showing a lovely aged patina, with some scale rusting in a few small areas on the blade. The edges of the blade and the tip show bending and wear, so this definitely saw some use during its life. The folded steel socket is still round, and this would definitely look great fitted to the end of spear or pike. There are no markings that we can see, but this was not uncommon at all during the 17th century and earlier.
A wonderful example ready for further research and display!
