Original German WWII M38 Luftschutz Beaded Gladiator Air Defense Helmet with 56cm Liner – dated 1938 Original Items

Original Item: Only One Available. This is a very nice original M1938 Beaded Luftschutz Gladiator German helmet. The exterior of this German helmet retains virtually all of the original dark blue paint, with only light overall wear and some scuffs. The helmet still has all three of the original hollow liner attachment rivets, with fully intact paint. The Luftschutz decal is clean and is one of the best we have ever seen, at about 95% complete! It just has a few small chips, as well as a bit of yellowing due to age.

The inner skirt is maker marked with stamping into the steel with RL2 – 38 / 28. These markings would seem to indicate that the helmet was made in 1938, though we do not know if any records were kept of the maker. It may be that it was made under a 1938 contract. This indicates the pricing and distribution information: Highest Price 8.– Reichsmark.  Distribution approved according to Section 8 Air protection legislation. Head Width 55. The markings are fully clear, with just a bit of wear.

The liner in this helmet features three leather pads over an oilcloth covered liner band. The style is reminiscent of earlier WWI liners, with three pads topped with two fingers each, which have a twine securing string installed. The three cork pads are still present between the liner band and shell. The leather chin strap is also present, and fully intact. There is even a faded issue stamp on one of the liner panels, which indicates issue to a location in Köln (Cologne), Germany!
