Original Items: One Set of Two Available. This is a really nice set of German WWII Kriegsmarine Navy Candlesticks, which take the form of hilts from the standard “Lion’s Head” style of officer’s sword. While not the same quality casting as would have been used on actual swords, they are still very nice, made from cast brass alloy, and heavily gilt, most of which is remaining. Both have the proper wire wrapped white celluloid covered grips, as opposed to the black used by other branches.
Each “hilt” is mounted on a nickel-plated domed steel base, and attached to the bottom using round split bolts. The “Blade” of each is a short steel bar, which terminates in a nickel-plated candle socket. We have been told that traditionally one stick would hold a green candle, while the other a red one, representing the standard colors for starboard (green) and port (red), and on the officer’s table they would be properly oriented with respect to the ship.
The “P” guards on both are decorated with the typical “Oak Leaf and Acorn” motif, which is on both grip ferrules as well. The grip back straps are a nice floral motif, and both lion’s heads are nicely executed. The cross guards are decorate with the standard spread wing NDSAP Eagle over a mobile Swas. Each measures about 8 1/2 inches tall, and is 4 3/4 inches across the base.
A love display set for any German WWII Maritime collection.
